#FitnessFriday: Finding A Gym That Works For You

Just like when buying clothes, everyone has different tastes, and these tastes often also come down to choosing a gym. Depending on what you're looking for, there will be gyms out there that work, and gyms that don't. As I train with a trainer twice a week (Once with Darren and once with Jade), I go to two gyms (Shinny's Boxing Gym in Stockport & Nuffield Health) as they're based at one, and I go to another - but I'm well aware this is quite outside the norm. But here are my key things to think about.

  1. What is it for? If you've got an interest in Pilates, but your gym doesn't offer it, you're probably going to the wrong place. Because I love changing up my workouts (I get bored way too easily) so Shinny's Gym in Stockport where I train at twice a week is ideal. As it's a boxing gym, theres loads of space for circuits, loads of bags and of course weights with a few cardio machines. Whereas Nuffield is the complete opposite with a heavy focus on the cardio machines.
  2. Is it accessible? If you're reliant on Public Transport and it takes three buses to get to your gym, you'll never go. Both gyms are only one bus away and in traffic, take less than 20 minutes to get to from home. They're also both close enough to work & uni that it doesn't seem a strain.
  3. What's the atmosphere like? Even if your gym is all shiny stainless steel and state of the art technology, if it's intimidating or the staff aren't great, you're not going to go. That's why I love training at Shinny's Gym as everyone there is so approachable and friendly. The way it's set out isn't intimidating and all the PT's are always willing to help. Plus Shinny has a great sense of humour.
  4. Cost. Ultimately for most of us, this is a key factor. Everyone has a different budget and there are gyms that range from £9.99 a month to £75.00 depending on what you want. Decide whats affordable, then choose what suits you. It's not worth shelling out on something if you're having to cut down on heating or petrol just to get there.

What kind of things do you think about when choosing a Gym?
