There's something about Christmas & New Years that warrants an excessive amount of glittery & bright makeup. Whether it's time to breakout that crazy highlight or pack on the OTT glittery eyeshadow. Now is the time. And here are some of my favourites to shake up your look.

The Estee Lauder Double Wear Cushion Stick* is the perfect base to have on hand for the party season. Not only is it high coverage, but it gives the perfect amount of natural glow to your skin - avoiding removing too much dimension. I prefer this to the traditional double wear but it's great for anything where there may be a bit of flash photography as it means you'll avoid the dreadful white cast. If you do use this, I wouldn't recommend using the cushion bit - I apply it to my skin in dots and then blend with a brush.

For skin makeup, I think Christmas is a great excuse for a bold & glittery highlight. I really love the Cover FX Perfect Light Highlighting Palette*. This consists of both powder and cream shades which blend out seamlessly. These are seriously shimmery so I pat them on with my finger tips - a little goes a long way.

But for eyes, nothing looks better than a beautifully blended out metallic gold shadow. I'm in love with the Kiko Into the Dark Metallic Eyeshadow in 01*. A simple liquid formula, this really packs a punch. I apply it in the centre of my lid and blend it out, building up the colour. This looks incredible and suitably festive.

And for lips, I've been really trying to push away from the stereotypical red lip and go for something a little bit more different. Which is where my love for metallic lipsticks arose. The Kiko Into the Dark Metallic Lip Colour in 02* is stunning and a perfect red-wine-stained-lips colour with a gorgeous metallic twist. It has really great lasting power if you're only going to be drinking but doesn't really hold for eating. I've also been liking the LA Girl Metal Liquid Lipstick in Opulent* which has a copper toned red finish. This has a less liquid texture than the Kiko offering but it means it does last a lot better with food & drink. But of course, if you're heading to a festive dinner, then I'd suggest going for a nude lip paired with a bold eye look - I really love the NYX Lipstick Lingerie in Bedtime Flirt which is a pink toned nude and wonderfully simple.

What are some of your makeup essentials for the festive period? What do I need to pick up?
