Many of us travel as a way to relieve stress, as a much-needed break is often the best way to relax and unwind away from the things that bother us at home. However, our experiences away can often be muted by those common stress factors that are brought upon by travel. We will take a look at two of them below and give you a few tips on overcoming them. Hopefully, you will then get all of that r&r that you need when you're next on your travels.

Stress #1: Missing luggage

You might discover items of your luggage are missing when standing at the airport carousel. Or it could be when you're sat in the airport waiting lounge, and you realise to your horror that one of your bags has been stolen. You might also misplace your luggage or become the victim of a crime when you're transporting your bags to the hotel at your chosen destination. Whatever the case, if those bags contained your travel necessities, you are going to experience a lot of stress.

Tips: Ensure your bags are easily identifiable, perhaps with a barrage of stickers or some coloured ribbons, as they shouldn't then be picked up by mistake. Make use of the storage lockers at the airport too, or use a service akin to Stasher, especially when you have a long waiting time at the airport. And invest in a zipperless suitcase, or attach padlocks to your bags, as these simple steps will make life harder for any would-be travel thief!

Stress #2: Financial worries

There could be two stresses here. The first is discovering you don't have enough money to do everything you want while away. And the second could be the stress of knowing that you have spent a fortune on your trip, and that when you get home, you are going to have to make a few apologetic phone calls to your utility and credit card companies.

Tips: As with everything you need in life, do what you can to save money before going away. This way, you will have more opportunities to do the things that you want to do, and you won't have to max out your credit card when doing them. Secondly, find ways to travel cheaply. So, consider travelling during off-peak seasons, as you should get flight and hotel discounts. Alternatively, book well in advance, as you should benefit from cheaper prices, or sign up to airline sites to be notified for last-minute deals. And plan what you are going to do in advance, as this way, you will be able to budget for your bucket list dreams. Here are some other ideas for cheap travel.

Finally

There are other causes of travel stress, of course. From dealing with obnoxious airplane passengers to getting lost when you're out and about, there are all kinds of ways in which your stress levels might be impacted. Still, you don't have to let such things interfere with your relaxation time. Research those causes of travel stress that you have already experienced personally, and find ways to overcome them before you next embark on your travels.
