I’ve only ever had a general anaesthetic in a hospital for a routine operation once. I remember two things about the experience. First, when the nurse put the needle in the back of my hand and told me I would start to feel sleepy now, and to count back from 100, I said I felt as wide awake as ever and that counting back from 100 would probably mean I’d hit zero, and that I was awfully sorry but they were going to need to ‘up’ my dose.
