The Essentials: Workwear/Day-to-Night Dressing #AD

With my Masters coming to an end and the start of my new job looming, I’m starting to think more and more about what to wear to work. Whilst my new job is hardly Business smart, I think it’s important to create a distinction between casual wear and work wear so I’m definitely creating a work wardrobe! But of course, that means that I need a collection of pieces that work well for after work drinks – or at least an outfit that works for both.

And here are my top tips for taking your outfit from business chic to perfect for the evening.

1. Think about accessories.

Accessories are probably the easiest ways to update your look. What could be annoying during the work day, is a fab way to add a bit of fun to your look and make it perfect for hitting a bar in the evening. Whether it’s a pair of statement earrings or a fun bag (like this Rounded Crossbody) – it definitely updates your look!

2. Prints.

I’m a huge fan of having a few statement print pieces in your wardrobe. Whether it’s a fab printed pair of trousers (like these Tailored Striped Trousers), or a pair of Leopard Print Heels (like these), they add a pop of something different to a traditional work wardrobe.

3. Switch Up your Styling.

Updating a look from day-to-night doesn’t mean that you have to bring items to change into – a great way is to add a twist to something you normally wear. I’m a huge fan of all things printed blazers and think they look brilliant when paired with a lacy camisole and plain trousers. Wear this with a pair of heels and it’s a great smart-casual outfit.

4. Don’t Underestimate Makeup.

Whether you wear makeup or not – choosing to slick on a red lipstick is a definite transition from office to a night out. Whilst more muted tones may be more appropriate for every day, a bold lip is a great way to not only refresh your makeup but to add a bit of flair.

5. Mix business + casual.

If you’re less of a bar-after-work gal and more of a pub type, mixing in a casual piece into your outfit can make the outfit feel far less business. Try pairing a fine knit jumper with a pair of paper bag waist trousers for a look that is still smart enough for work, but not too much for drinks on a Friday. Fine-knit can look quite smart (especially Cashmere) so can be ideal for the cooler months (as it keeps you warm!)
